What to expect when you contact The New England Center for Headache

When you make an appointment to visit The New England Center for Headache (NECH) you will receive a questionnaire that must be completed and mailed to The Center in advance of your initial visit. Your responses will be reviewed prior to your arrival and will be discussed with you when you visit us.

The frequency and severity of your headaches can be decreased and controlled through appropriate medication and/or behavioral treatment. An accurate diagnosis is, however, essential to ensure that treatment is appropriate.

Expect to spend 2-4 hours at NECH during your first appointment. At this visit, you will undergo testing, have a thorough neurological evaluation, and will have a consultation with your doctor to review your headache history, his findings, your diagnosis, and your treatment options. Some patients may meet with behavioral specialists as well as with physicians; others spend time with specialized headache educators. In all cases, evaluation and treatment are individualized, based on your unique headache profile.

You may receive medication, which is prescribed with your special situation and needs in mind. Medication may be adjusted over time, depending upon your response. You may also be referred for behavioral therapy, including biofeedback, relaxation, and stress management. These therapeutic interventions are available at our center for patients within convenient traveling distance; other patients are referred to therapists close to their homes.

NECH is conveniently located in Stamford, CT and is easily reached via the Merritt Parkway, Route 684, and I-95, as well as by train, airplane, and bus. For further information or to make an appointment, telephone 203-968-1799.
