The New England Research Institute (NERI) was founded in the early 90's to support the research efforts of Drs. Alan Rapoport, Fred Sheftell, and Stewart Tepper.  They have achieved national prominence as medical researchers and have been extensively involved in numerous clinical trials for almost three decades, bringing new safe and effective medications to the market.

As founders of The New England Center for Headache, P.C. in Stamford, CT they have published extensively in the medical literature, and are the authors of 8 books on headache for patients and doctors.  They have been featured as medical experts on such shows as 20/20, Dateline NBC, Innovations, the Today Show, Good Morning America, and have been featured guests on both Connecticut and National Public Radio.  They enjoy a listing in Woodward and White's, "Best Doctors in America," a book identifying outstanding doctors as voted by their peers.

For many years their efforts were limited to the field of headache disorders, but they are now involved in research in other areas of neuroscience, including the study of Alzheimer's Disease, and neuro-psychiatric illnesses.  The doctors and staff are excited about their participation in the development of potentially effective and safe medications in the treatment of these disabling disorders.

Dr. Rapoport and Dr. Tepper, both board certified neurologists, and Dr. Sheftell, a board certified psychiatrist, have successfully blended their expertise clinical investigations and treatment of neurological and psychiatric disorders.  In addition, Marcelo Bigal, M.D., Ph. D. is a neurologist with extensive research background.  He develops and implements all therapeutic and innovative studies at the Institute and is the Director.  They are supported by a  well trained staff,. Fran Arrowsmith, M.P.H., a nurse practitioner has been the Research Director for 25 years and assits Dr. Bigal in all areas of reasearch.  

Other fulltime members of the research staff include Lori Choyce, R.N. Kathy Diomede, R.N., Gizella Sebestyen as well as an administrative staff of five.

The Behavioral Medicine Division is headed by Drs. Steven Baskin and Randal Weeks. neuropsychologists who are available for neuropsychological testing and consultation.

We are currently running clinical trials on Migraine, Chronic Daily Headache, Cluster Headache and Alzheimer’s Disease. Please see our postings for current studies and future studies.
